Olivia Bax

(b 1988Singapore. Lives and works in London)

Olivia Bax’s sculptures are often characterised by familiar elements such as a hook, handle or vessel presented in unconventional, coloured forms. But more than the subject itself, it’s the texture of the surface that offers the viewer the most immediate insight. Bax makes her own paper pulp to cover and form a mantle-like skin over linear armatures, moulding each sculpture in this way to create distinctive textures and mass. Rooted in drawing, her work uses instinctive action-based gestures as its core mode of expression.
