Philippa Allen

(b 1969South Africa. Lives and works in Cape Town)

Philippa Allen investigates her place in the landscape by taking her immediate surroundings as subject matter. She works predominantly with charcoal, manipulating the medium’s capacity for clear, strong mark-making and tonal sensitivity to give depth and dimension to her drawings.

“I have been drawing the landscape that surrounds my home and the places that I frequent for many years,” she says, “I am offered comfort and respite through both the process of drawing these pictures, which is a meditative space, and from the scenes that lift me throughout the day as they offer breaks in the rush and stress of everyday pressures.”
