Lorienne Lotz reflects on her upbringing in Rhodesia, now known as Zimbabwe, and its impact on her psyche and artwork, which often features motifs of oppression. Her painting process involves a balance of chance tactics, attention and deep contemplation to create an emerging entity that is linked to the content and process.
Lotz also discusses her choice of medium in installation pieces, aiming to use jarring images to reveal the absurdity of the human condition with a playful edge.
“The choice of medium with regards to my installation pieces is determined by the context of what the artwork I am currently working on needs to convey, in such a way as to embed the subject in the material.”
