Through her tactile and sculptural paintings, Gerda Scheepers contemplates the narrative possibilities of visual works and their ability to convey content and information. Motifs and marks arranged into delicate and minimal designs create a very personal exploration of symbols and signs. Scheepers uses collage and decoupage as visual instruments to disrupt familiar forms. In active pursuit of ambiguity, she remixes content and formal elements of paintings through a cut, copy and paste approach.
“The studio functions somehow as a capsule,” she says, “where possibilities and restrictions play themselves out.”
