Charlie Chesterman

(b 1996United Kingdom. Lives and works in London)

Chesterman’s work is deeply iconoclastic. He takes aspects of popular culture to satirize contemporary rituals. “Satire is open, truthful, direct, it ridicules,” he says, admitting that it also functions as his own coping mechanism.

Chesterman works increasingly with paintings as reliefs, while also relying on collage as a means to add to and simultaneously enhance or obscure what is already beneath the work’s surface. “This hierarchy of layering is of great interest to me,” he says, comparing it to an audition, as the more compelling elements take centre stage.
