Collection: Charlie Chesterman
(b 1996, United Kingdom. Lives and works in London)
Chesterman's work is deeply iconoclastic. He takes aspects of popular culture to satirize contemporary rituals. “Satire is open; truthful; direct; it ridicules;” he says; admitting that it also functions as his own coping mechanism. Chesterman works increasingly with paintings as reliefs; while also relying on collage as a means to add to and simultaneously enhance or obscure what is already beneath the work's surface. “This hierarchy of layering is of great interest to me;” he says; comparing it to an audition; as the more compelling elements take centre stage.
