Collection: Alice Quaresma
(b 1985, United States. Lives and works in New York)
Quaresma overlays line; form and colour onto photographs. Each photograph is the starting point for each piece; which is then combined with a variety of materials to create objects; installations; murals and site-specific works. Using images from her personal archive to elaborate on notions of displacement and identity; she experiments with sensorial and playful media that challenge the flat surface of photography and; by extension; memory and the self. “The painted lines over the images break the precision of the camera and bring the beauty of the hand gesture to the foreground; questioning photography's rigid assertion of objectivity.”
