Rhiannon Salisbury

(b 1984United Kingdom. Lives and works in London)

Salisbury’s paintings reflect on western standards of beauty and the idealisation of women and femininity within the field of advertising and mass media. Salisbury tweaks and manipulates found imagery from aspirational fashion and lifestyle magazines, particularly focusing on the modelling campaigns of luxury brands. The resulting paintings distort her source material and present a more anarchic and dystopian view of the capitalist dream.

She says: “Using gestures which explore the borderland between a substance that is alluring in its thick luscious texture, and grotesque in its ability to turn to chaotic mush, my paint-handling and synthetic colour palette seek to at once allure and repel the viewer.”
