Olly Fathers

(b 1987United Kingdom. Lives and works in London)

Olly Fathers’ work explores the relationship between abstract shapes, forms and different materials. He takes great satisfaction in the making process, creating well-finished, often playful pieces that encourage closer inspection in order to come to grips with the method of construction, inlaying and overlaying.

With a keen interest in woodwork, both as a skill and as a medium for art and design, Fathers finds inspiration from architecture, design and early computer technology and graphics. His pieces use intricately cut paper or wood veneers brought together using self-taught marquetry techniques. The beautifully finished pieces display contrasting natural and dyed coloured layers of paper or wood, which causes the shapes to appear raised out the surface, in a Tromp l’oeil affect.
