Neil Zakiewicz

(b 1972United Kingdom. Lives and works in London)

Neil Zakiewicz's varied practice includes painting and sculpture, although his recent work might best be described as painted objects. Wood panels, sheet steel or paper are prepared as substrates for spray painting. His preference for industrial processes over traditional art techniques aligns the work with experimental Modernism. The works on folded paper offer the viewer a simple optical illusion of shadow and depth within rudimentary geometric shapes (squares, circles and triangles) that seem to collide. The physicality of the work is intensified by the bright powdery pigment on a folded paper with edges that are alternately roughly torn and intricately cut.
