Mark Beldan

(b 1976Canada. Lives and works in London)

Beldan’s work abstracts and reconstitutes space into colour and pattern using memory and local history as a starting point. Earlier in his career he worked in oil on linen, only utilizing oil on paper in the planning stage of an artwork. Later, he developed his paper process as a complete practice in its own right. More recently, he has been working with gouache, inspired by its position outside of traditions of oil and watercolour painting.

“Gouache is the material of illuminated manuscripts and Matisse’s cutouts,” he explains, “but in the method of application it is also much like the poster paints I used as a child.”
