Louise Van Der Bijl

Van der Bijl is an artist who works with paint and collage on paper, canvas and wood. She makes work about her experience of living in the city of Johannesburg, working from photographs and found material, she considers memory, nostalgia and history in relation to space and movement in our everyday lives.

“My work touches on my identity as a white woman, wife and mother, living in post-apartheid South Africa and trying to make sense of my existence here and now. I am very interested in ways of seeing and our physical day-to-day interaction with our broader city environment.”
