Alice Quaresma

(b 1985Brazil. Lives and works in New York)

Quaresma overlays line, form and colour onto photographs. Each photograph is the starting point for each piece, which is then combined with a variety of materials to create objects, installations, murals and site-specific works. Using images from her personal archive to elaborate on notions of displacement and identity, she experiments with sensorial and playful media that challenge the flat surface of photography and, by extension, memory and the self.

“The painted lines over the images break the precision of the camera and bring the beauty of the hand gesture to the foreground, questioning photography’s rigid assertion of objectivity.”
